A Flag for NSW

Petition to the NSW Parliament

New South Wales deserves a flag of its own.

Our current flag is made entirely of British symbols. We're asking Parliament to debate a new design built from what really says NSW — the waratah, our sky blue and the Southern Cross — and put it to voters at the 2031 state election.

Why change

Every symbol on our flag is British. None of them is NSW.

Look closely at the current state flag and you'll find three emblems — all borrowed from Great Britain. There's nothing on it that someone overseas, or even interstate, would recognise as New South Wales.

The current NSW flag: a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the top corner and the state badge on the right — a white disc with St George's red cross, a golden lion and four gold stars This is Britain's flag, not yours! St George's Cross — that's England's! A British lion? Where is the waratah?? D− Nothing here says NSW.
The current NSW flag. The Union Jack, St George's Cross and the lion are all British emblems.

The proposed design

Simple. Recognisable. Unmistakably NSW.

Every part of the new flag means something here — and the whole thing is simple enough for a child to draw from memory.

Inspired by the design of Brendan Jones, featured in Ausflag's collection of NSW flag designs.

1/3

The Southern Cross on dark blue

The hoist third carries the Southern Cross, the same stars as the Australian flag. It ties NSW firmly to the nation we're part of.

A stylised waratah

The waratah is our state floral emblem and is instantly recognised as New South Wales — at home, interstate and overseas.

Light blue, our state colour

Sky blue is the colour of New South Wales — worn with pride on game day and now on the flag that represents us.

The petition

Let Parliament debate it. Let voters decide in 2031.

We're not asking for the flag to be changed overnight. We're asking for the new design to be formally proposed as an alternative, debated in the NSW Parliament and considered at the 2031 state election.

Questions

Does this change the Australian flag?

No. This campaign is only about the NSW state flag. The new design keeps the Southern Cross to show we're part of Australia.

Why wait until 2031?

A flag should last a century. Five years gives everyone time to see the design, debate it and make up their own mind before voting.
